Through the generous support of Ed Harrell, Amarillo rancher and businessman, I have created a 9’ x 22’ mosaic as a tribute to his late wife, Carol Flynn Harrell (1936-2008). This mosaic and garden was dedicated on May 5, 2009.
The production process requires the placement of 3/4” tiles in precise order into 15” square grids. Preparing the image digitally in Photoshop serves as a guide as to tile placement. These tiles are then glued onto paper sheets and labeled with their specific row and column. When the image is completely pasted up, my wife and I put the image together in our home driveway to confirm that all is well and that all colors were in their proper place. I rented a “cherry-picker” to allow some photographs from above and to get a good distant view.
After the mosaic was installed on the wall, the garden foreground was planted with plants native to Palo Duro Canyon. Rock and dead juniper trunks was brought in from Mr. Harrell’s ranch to complete the composition.
The slide show below shows the layout and installation.
